Welcome to PHD music. PHD Music LLC was formed in 1990 in Portland, Oregon as a record company representing the recordings of a fresh new jazz trio called Tall Jazz. The name PHD Music was derived from the three members of the trio at that time: Presley, Horsfall and Deutscher. Tall Jazz’s success, both in performance and in CD marketing via PHD Music, attracted other local recording artists. Soon PHD Music’s scope widened to include a representation of jazz talent in the Portland area. Today the PHD Music catalog represents the music of over 50 musicians, including such world class artists as Dave Frishberg, Rebecca Kilgore, Canada’s Brad Turner, Ireland’s Brian Dunning, Marilyn Keller, Dan Balmer, George Mitchell, Steinway artist Randy Porter, Jay Ungar, Dan Faehnle, Gordon Lee and others. To date, PHD Music has released 15 projects with plans for more..
