Tall Jazz was formed in 1989 with the goal of establishing a unique sounding jazz group with an emphasis on distinctive arrangements of 'standard' repertoire as well as original material. Tall Jazz has enjoyed multi-year return engagements to jazz festivals, special concerts, performances, vinyards and many steady club engagements.

The group mission has expanded from the local club scene to include concerts, workshops, art events, educational clinics and public celebrations. Another important aspect is the expansion of the group for special events. As an example, Tall Jazz has pioneered a successful holiday show for the past 13 years, expanding the group with outstanding musicians to include a horn section, percussion and vocals. The music is arranged especially for these artists, and the results can be heard on our "Tall Jazz Plays Winter Jazz" and "Winter Jazz II" CD, featuring internationally renowned vocalist Rebecca Kilgore. Mike Horsfall has developed a reputation as an outstanding arranger in addition to his music performance skills, which gives great flexibility to the sound that Tall Jazz can provide.

The instrumentation ranges from an intimate vibes/bass duo to a 10 PC 'knockout' big band. The large ensemble recently completed a successful concert for Chemeketa Community College,(Salem,Or) which featured the talents of Marilyn Keller (vocals),John Fresk (piano), Warren Rand (alto sax), Lee Wuthenow (tenor sax), Paul Mazzio (trumpet, flugelhorn), Dan Balmer (guitar), and Donny Osborne (drummer for Mel Torme for 20 yrs). The format used most often is our original trio sound: vibes, bass and drums. Demo recordings of our ensembles are available on request.

To date, Tall Jazz has performed over 1600 engagements and recorded 6 CDs. The newest CD, 'Ode To A Vibes Generation' was released in September 2001 as a tribute to vibists Milt Jackson, Red Norvo and Cal Tjader.
